“It will be good because the schools won't have to take on this role that was really never theirs appropriately to begin with, even though they embraced it so that they could keep going with their educational mission,” she says. “Even though they are traditionally caregivers of students, it's really put them in this really difficult situation, to try and keep track of guidelines, keep track of changes, interpret new information, and then bring it into the school on a day-to-day basis,” says Valvano, who is the founder of SchoolMD, an organization that brings medical professionals into schools to help keep students and faculty safe from COVID-19 and other illnesses.
But most importantly, the new CDC recommendations will allow teachers and other school staff to focus on their main role of being educators, instead of “enforcers of medical guidelines,” says Mary Valvano, MD, an emergency room doctor.
